Andy comes to Auburn with over 20 years of experience as a talented special education leader in both private and public school systems. He started teaching as a Peace Corp volunteer in Guatemala, and continued his career as a teacher, principal and central office administrator within the DC metro area. During his tenure in education he also served as a content expert in special education for the U.S. Department of Education Race to the Top State Grant competition. He is currently working on his doctoral studies at Johns Hopkins University where he also served as adjunct faculty. He is licensed through the Maryland State Department of Education with endorsements as a Superintendent, Principal, Pupil Personnel Worker, Special Education Teacher and Political Science Teacher. Andy received his undergraduate degree from The Pennsylvania State University and holds two masters degrees, one in Student Counseling from The American University, and a second in School Administration and Supervision from McDaniel College.

Mary Anna Ouakil, Head of School

Mary Anna Ouakil brings more than eight years of education leadership and more than ten years in special education to the role of Head of School. Before serving here at The Auburn School, Fairfax, she served other schools as principal, director of student support, director of admissions, development, and marketing, and teacher of math, science, and English language arts. She holds a master’s degree in Special Education and an Education Specialist degree in Education Leadership. She is in the dissertation phase of her doctorate, also in Education Leadership. Ms. Ouakil also holds additional certifications and training in education therapy, autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, executive function skills, SEL, and early reading intervention practices.

Catherine joins the Auburn school with 20 years of experience working with students stateside and Internationally. Catherine has spent the majority of time working with students with autism and social and emotional disabilities. Prior to joining Auburn Catherine has served as a special educator, instructional coach, and principal with pubic and non-public schools in the Maryand/DC area. Catherine’s educational philosophy is “ all children can succeed” using a constructive approach to teaching and learning students. This approach stimulates intellectual camaraderie, argumentation, and cooperative problem solving and lay the groundwork for life-long collaborative practice. Catherine has her advanced professional certificate in special education from the state of Maryland.

Teasha Grant, Business Manager

Teasha joined the Auburn team in March 2017 after over 13 years in her previous position. She came to Auburn with a wealth of knowledge in billing and accounts receivables, and created the billing dept by developing central systems and processes to ensure accurate and timely billing and payments. Teasha works with Auburn Schools and their sister division Little Leaves Behavioral Services as she continues building systems and relationships in the finance department.

Ana joins the Auburn team this year after 11 years of working with individuals with Autism and emotional, intellectual and learning disabilities. She began her professional career as a case manager at a social service agency, serving in their Special Needs and Deaf Services Department. There, she organized and championed a social club whose main purpose was to enable and empower teenagers and young adults to form relationships with their peers while developing and enhancing their social skills strategies. Afterwords, Ana transitioned to Sheppard Pratt, where she spent 8 years at The Frost School as an educational assistant before becoming an assistant behavior specialist. For the last 2 years, she taught 4th grade Special Education in another Sheppard Pratt program. Ana obtained her B.A. in Child and Adolescent Development and Social Services from Juniata College, and is working to finish her M.A. in Special Education at Notre Dame of Maryland University.
